| John Houle specializes in what is now a rare art form: woodburning (or pyrography) enhanced with an acrylic wash. He started out as an oil painter, winning his first regional contest in second grade. He later studied under Jaccques Rommel at Central Connecticut State College, and he was a successful oil painter throughout his early adult life. Then in 1982, he became interested in the challenge of woodburning, where there is no margin for error. After mastering this art form, he has been winning awards for his work in this medium ever since. Wildlife and nautical themes are his main focus, with endangered species predominating. His work has a tactile component, and he encourages viewers to run their hands over his pieces to enhance the experience. Currently he is represented in galleries from Connecticut to Florida.
