Sal Barracca studied painting and illustration at the Norwich Free Academy in Connecticut and the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. He worked as a commercial illustrator and art teacher, and later he held positions as art director for Avon Books, Ladies’ Home Journal, and Bantam Books. As an outgrowth of his business relationships with numerous illustrators, he became an illustrator’s agent, a position that enabled him to find and develop new talent for the publishing and advertising industries.

Along with his graphic designer wife Debra, he created, wrote, designed, and art directed a series of children’s books called The Adventures of Taxi Dog, published by Dial Books in 1990. The series won numerous awards and was featured on several TV programs, including the PBS shows “Reading Rainbow” and “Storytime.”

As a fine arts painter, he has had solo shows at The Lenox Gallery in Lenox MA, The Gunn Memorial Library in Washington, CT, and the Winvian Resort in Morris, CT. Connecticut group shows include The 550 Gallery in Bethlehem, The Washington Art Association, and the Kent Art Association. He currently works in acrylic on masonite panels.
